Opium Clippers
Booking &#38;amp; inquiries:barbara(at)glej.siThe Opium Clippers is a visual essay joining hand painted ceramics and performance. The central part of the project are five hand painted ceramic tea sets. The work is activated with a tea ceremony that uses ritual and storytelling to shed light on the history of the period of the ‘China dream’ that resulted in conflict and colonisation, and in the development of global capitalism. As the story of the opium ships unfolds, the tea ritual reveals how 19th century tea and opium trade profoundly shaped the political world today.

	Illegal trades, often drug trades, have historically been the basis of colonial projects. Their infrastructures allow for accumulation of capital, they rely on tax evasion, speculation and on exploitative forms of labour, on extraction of materials and value. Their legacies and current iterations are, regardless of their hidden nature, embedded in our shared present. While these massive historical currents are omitted from historical narratives, as well as most socio-political analysis, their systemic impact on the lives of communities and individuals is neglected even more.

The Opium Clippers starts from the opioid addiction epidemic in the United States which has, in the past 20 years, claimed around 0.5 million lives, and asks: how do illegal drug economies and their financiral currents manifest, and shape the lives of communities? How can we speak about the current epidemics while and by speaking about the past?&#38;nbsp;How can performative practices, storytelling and ritual expand our sensitivity towards addiction, and deepen our knowledge about systemic violence?

Since their premiere in 2017, I performed the Opium Clippers more than a 100 times. So far they have been presented in 16 countries.They were performed, among other: at TATE Exchange, London; ZOOM Festival, Rijeka; Young Lions Festival, Ljubljana; Bazaar Festival, Prague; Auawirleben Festival, Bern; Sarajevo Winter, Sarajevo; Prototipi festival in Cagliari; at the Institute of Contmporary Art, Cetinje; Winchester School of Art, Winchester; ACT Festival, Sofia; Cukrarna Center for Contemporary Art, Ljubljana etc.

“The artist book Opium Clippers is based on the series of homonymous tea ceremonies. In the second half of the 18th and beginning of 19 thcenturies the tea and opium trade was one of the most lucrative businesses in the world and was, at the time, completely controlled by the great European colonial powers and private corporations enjoying state protection.

The book Opium Clippers is acombination of images and texts through which the artist narrates stories based on documents while, at the same time, consciously transitioning from the factual to the symbolic level of this issue. The tea and opium trade refer to a past time when notions of politics, class, gender, religion and culture as we know them now were being (trans)formed. It also refers to the present time, however, as this enormous industry is still at the heart of many economic and military superpowers, whose roots can be traced to tea and opium trade. Numerous successful financial, trade or transport companies still active today were established in the period of the tea and opium trade, often as a result of it. Basedon short-term planning and quick profits, the tea and opium trade had profound consequences on many societies around the globe.” (Miha Colner) &#38;nbsp;

		<description>Untangling a garden

an artistic research project weaving histories of two gardens in Slovenia and Egypt

	Untangling a Garden combines the imaginations of two parks: one of the first exotic parks in Slovenia (Rafutski Park) and the imaginary park of the so-called “Alexandria women” in Alexandria. Both parks emerged in the first half of the 20th century during a period of intense relations and migration between the two countries.
Rafutski Park is a property around the so-called Egyptian villa, built in neo-Islamic style by Anton Laščak, a Slovenia-born architect who worked in Egypt as the chief architect of Abbas Hilmi II. The park was long abandoned and grew into a paradise garden with many overgrown exotic and invasive plants.
In contrast, the park in Alexandria was a small garden where regional vegetables, most notably a salad green indigenous to the region back home, were grown for the community of Slovenian women, the so-called “Alexandria women.” &#38;nbsp;They came in thousands from poor and rural areas, mainly from towns in the region around Trieste port. They migrated to Alexandria to work in various professions of care: as nannies, wet nurses, chaperones, and gouvernants.

	Untangling a Garden is an artistic research project dedicated to Rafutski Park, interweaving stories from its history with its botany, and unravelling the imagination related to the park, as well as to the intense period of exchanges between Slovenia and Egypt at the turn of the 20th century and in the first half of the 20th century. The starting point of the research is the botanical archaeology of the park, i.e. the historical, cultural, mythological and symbolic aspects of plants. The project links them with historical and social changes (such as the history of women's migration in care work, the exchange of plants between Egypt and Alexandria, the roles of plants and food in the communities of that time and today, architectural impact, etc.)
 Untangling a Garden seeks to unravel the threads of the rich cultural exchanges between Egypt and Slovenia, but above all, it seeks to outline the rich and complex lives of plants through research, performance and community events in Rafutski Park.

Circle is a theatre essay and an installation that explores temporal layers in the materiality of public parks in ruins, and particularly the remnants of imagined futures that are layered in their soils – material relics, and how they are stored in the imagination and memories of people and other beings.

Circle tells stories about three parks at a time of their transformation. It guides us through their materiality: soil, construction materials, remaining traces of its users, animals and plants, and with their help attempts to build an understanding of how common public spaces are impacted by the socio-political organisation of work and the corresponding concept of free time. It takes as a starting point a 19th century private park in Alexandria (the Antioniadis park) as a social form that embodies the display of wealth and power, but also a will to subordinate nature; and a working class park (the Railway Workers Park) in Cluj in Romania, as a public space that symbolically merged work and leisure cultures. In the many years of neglect and then reclaiming of the park through the devoted work of artists and activists, this park remains a public park, but the social tissue of the city has meanwhile completely changed.

	Circle performance and installation propose a transformation of the gallery or theatre space into a park filled with sculptures made of found materials, scraps and fragments of ruins, and invite the visitors for a walk through these parks at a moment of their erasure or transformation. As a leitmotif, the park also accompanies other, personal stories of the narrators – as a legacy, a nonument, the trace of which remains in the memories of (former) users even after the change in land use.

		<description>wide winds, we set sail

	Two-channel video, drawings, sculpturesFrom 2020 - 2023
Commissioned by IoDeposito.

The Galeb sailboat was owned by the famous Slovenian ballet duo Pina and Pie Mlakar. They sailed with it throughout their lives and then donated it to the Maritime Museum “Sergej Mašera” in Piran. The museum initiated the restoration of the boat, which took place between 2020 and 2022 in the Cantiere Alto Adriatico Custom workshop. There, sailboats are dismantled to the basic frame of the still usable elements, keeping as many original parts as possible - because these original parts represent a bygone era that must be preserved. The work of these master craftsmen is dedicated to preserving the past on a symbolic level, but the nature of their work also treats time differently. The restoration of a sailing ship takes about a year, and each step is carefully executed.

Observing the renovation of the sailboat that embodies the Mlakars' commitment to sailing and a life dedicated to art, invisible structures and arrangements of objects in the shipyard, the unseaworthy parts of the sailboat, the dust, are brought to the forefront and interpreted as witnesses of the process of change.

	The starting point for the works in the exhibition is the observation of the temporal component of the paradox of Theseus' ship, which points out that a ship that has all its parts replaced may no longer be the same ship. Drawings, sculptures and videos interrogate the fragile links between two ships: the one that was and the one that is becoming.&#38;nbsp;One solution to the paradox is that the two ships are not the same, but both occupy the same space and time and therefore continue into each other. The works seek the fragile relationships, structures, tensions, voids and rhythms that emerge between the visible and invisible participants of this process.

In a series of sculptures that support and direct the gaze towards the unseaworthy parts of the boat, a choreography of objects, waste, dust, is pursued. They are understood as active and key players, in fact as the substance into which the spirit of the boat is poured during the two phases of renovation. The video follows the temporal and material observation of the indeterminacy and in-betweenness of a multi-year renovation process, the interaction and dance of the shipwrights and the wood. In this way, the works search for a ship that emerges in the in-between space and time.

Peripheral memories, exhibition view at Palazzo Costanzi, Trieste

	Video essay, 4k video, 20'39", 2021
	&#38;nbsp;Comissioned by IoDeposito

	The video essay revisits one of the earliest images caught on film: workers leaving a factory. It looks at both sides of the coin of a specific space and time, the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, in 2021: its shiny guarded gate, and the images behind it.

The essay was produced for the Peripheral Memories project that "aims to de-construct, rework and re-build in a collective key, and represent – through the physical body and the body of a work of art – the memory of the territories of the extreme north-eastern border (the Julian Alps and the Karst, the Udine foothills and the Isonzo), elaborating on the theme of absence and industrial divestment, while enhancing, through contemporary art practices, the industrial realities still present and active in the main sectors that have always characterized the region: the extraction and processing of metal, maritime industry, textiles and wood."&#38;nbsp;

BOOK
ABOUTThe Nonument Group (Neja Tomšič, Martin Bricelj Baraga, Miloš Kosec and Nika Grabar) is an artist and research collective focusing on Nonuments - 20th century architecture, monuments and public spaces that have undergone a shift in symbolic meaning or had lost it as a consequence of political and social changes. The Nonument Group’s artistic and theoretical approach aims to dissect memory and context of selected nonuments. With its artistic interventions, the Nonument Group sets out to explore tensions that could be released through each nonument's re-reading. The group’s research and artistic production address questions of memory, representation, semantics and other aspects of monumentalism, as well as attempts to publicly address the perception of public space and its role in everyday urban life.

In 2017, members of the Nonument Group (Baraga and Tomšič) initiated a two-year collaboration
projects MAPS (Mapping and Archiving Public Spaces) in partnership with six partner organisations&#38;nbsp;
across Europe (CCEA (Prague), WH Media / Beamy Space (Vienna), Tačka Komunikacije (Belgrade), House of Humor and Satire (Gabrovo), ARTos Foundation (Nicosia) and MoTA - Museum of Transitory Art (Ljubljana)). The result of this project is the Nonument database which maps and archives Nonuments across the world. The Nonument Group continues this work building an archive that can be read as a map of tensions embodied in spaces and buildings.

In 2021, the Nonument Group was awarded the Plečnik medal for the enrichment of architectural
culture.&#38;nbsp;

NONUMENT GROUP is a research and art collective that deals with processes of remembering and oblivion in space. Their activities include research on nonuments – architecture, monuments, public spaces, infrastructure – whose meaning has transformed as a result of social or political changes. In the process, the group has established a register of nonuments, organized field events, and explored diverse strategies to create artistic interventions that interrogate the meaning of heritage in space through theexperience of the present.The Nonument Group is formed by Neja Tomšič, Martin Bricelj Baraga, Nika Grabar and Miloš Kosec. In their projects, they collaborate internationally with a number of co-creators, researchers and artists.

The Nonument Group’s first intervention took place in the United States, when a Designated Free Speech Zone and one of the few public spaces in downtown Baltimore, the McKeldin Fountain, was earmarked for demolition. The group organised a performative walk, a workshop and a draw-a-thon led by Fred Scharmen during which we measured the fountain to be able to recreate it in virtual space.

After the fountain was demolished in 2016, the Nonument Group with Lisa Moren developed an
award-winning Augmented Reality app, a virtual memorial to the lost fountain: Nonument01: The

McKeldin Fountain. The app is a virtual walk-in reconstruction of the fountain in life size. Walkers are
able to experience the fountain, and while walking they encounter testimonies and memories of
Baltimoreans that frequented and used the fountain as a public space.

The Pioneer Railway was a 5 kilometres long railway on the then outskirts of Ljubljana. It operated between 1948 and 1954 and was entirely run by children, aged 7 to 14. Although it was visited by tens of thousands of people, it was, after it was dismantled, almost completely erased from collective memory.The former pioneer railway is today a scenic bicycle lane. The memory of the railway is preserved through individual efforts and through the memories of the former pioneer railway children.

From Nowhere to Noplace addresses themes of memory and erasure in relation to infrastructureand ideology. It takes the shape of a performative light and sound walk during the night on the ghostly former tracks of the Pioneer Railway. Walkers were invited to take a collective guided walk while listening to a sound essay that merges documentary sounds, excerpts of interviews with former pioneers and experts, and a narrated soundscape. Three performers – futuristic pioneers that guided the tour, performed symbolic choreographies to mark the decisive points in the railway’s life: VISION / OPENING / WORK / DECLINE. Each chapter had a different light- scape atmosphere. The procession concluded with the burning of four words: FUTURE, BODOČNOST, NOWHERE, NO PLACE.

FROM NOWHERE TO NOPLACE, THE PIONEER RAILWAY, 2020.
Video essay, 22’

“If you took the railway, you ended up nowhere, you couldn’t do anything there. Well, you could sit in

the waiting room, there were benches there. Or you took a walk on the field,” remembers one of the

pioneers, unknowingly commenting on trust in technology and the joy of travel in and of itself.

“The Pioneer Railway was built for the bright future. Standing in that future, now the present, the Nonument Group's video essay seamlessly shifts from its past (the actual of the archive), to its present erasure and extends to its possible futures. It is one of the possible attempts to explore the possible future at the intersection between an open archive and an experience of different contemporaneities.”
(from Nika Grabar’s text Will today really become yesterday’s tomorrow?)

DEUTSCHE MARKEN (in faithful hands), 2020.
Installation (hologram, video loop 1’54”), 2020

The installation “Deutsche Marken'' by the Nonument Group addresses collective memory as well as
collective oblivion of the economic transition of the former DDR in 1989-1994. The economic carriers
of identity – the products, factory emblems and industrial labels were transformed into an asset for privatisation and optimisation. In parallel, a similar unequal exchange was debated around the monetary union between the East and the West. The installation introduces the main carrier of this transition – the 1990 German Mark – that gets manipulated with the images of the production facilities transformed, developed as well as liquidated by the transitional Treuhand fund. In this synthesis, the mostly hidden and behind-the-scenes privatisation process spearheaded by the Treuhand fund is given a tangible and polemical form that brings back to life the names and facades of the liquidated factories. The magic tricks with the coins in the background – isn’t the fiat monetary system based purely on trust? – is the stimulus for gathering the individual views, memories and statements of this rarely addressed collective process of an often traumatic transition. Deutschmark, the stable currency of West Germany, was one of the central elements of Western economic propaganda as well as the basis of monetary union between East and West Germany in 1990. West Germany's currency was also the unofficial savings currency of much of Central and Eastern Europe in the period of transition between socialist and capitalist societies. Its last »surviving« remnant is the Bosnian Mark, still in use in this former Yugoslav republic almost twenty years after Deutschmark itself ceased to exist. Nonument Group from Slovenia, another former Yugoslav republic, chose to work with this powerful economic and political symbol to address&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;controversial economic, social and symbolic cost of transition for the East German society.

Savin Sever’s parking garage, one of his masterpieces, is characterised by a distinct duality: it is a revered example of modernist architecture of the 1960s and at the same time a neglected and “useless” building. With a sonic drive through the garage, the Nonument Group drew attention to the specific structure of the building, which is not only architecturally fascinating, but, even in its supposedly problematic present existence, full of vitality and individual improvisations. Through an open reading, the structure already offers the changing city around it a platform for renewed, technologically up-to-date, socially engaged and city-forming content.

CIRCLE, 2022.

Performative essay and installation
Exhibition: 8-channel sound composition, 7 sculptures, 2022
Performance: performance, 55’, 7 sculptures, 2022

Commissioned by Bunker, Ljubljana; CCCluj, Cluj; Teatro Dimora, Mondaino.

The Circle is a documentary performance that explores temporal layers in the materiality of public parks - ruins, and particularly the remnants of imagined futures that are layered in their soils – material relics, and how they are stored in the imagination and memories of people and other beings. The starting question of the Circle was: what do shared public spaces such as playgrounds, parks, gardens, community spaces say about the social organisation of work and how do they construct and shape narratives of happiness?

The project focuses on a concrete plot of land in Cluj in Romania, which for a certain period in history, came to be known as the Railway Workers' Park. This park was, at a certain period, a community space. Its origins go back to the industrialisation period, when the concept of leisure also emerged. This park became a place in which working-class and leisure cultures symbolically merged. It then was subject to processes of neglect which transformed it into a valuable plot of land. It is now at the point of renovation and complete erasure of its history.

The Circle is an 8-channel audio documentary installation with sculptures made from materials salvaged from construction sites. They are interpretations of poetic writings, linked to the specific locations we explored. The installation can be activated with a storytelling performance.

With their latest intervention at the U3 in one of the central venues of the institutional culturalinfrastructure and its controlled exhibition space –the Museum of Modern Art– Nonument Group (NG) presents their actions and at the same time a reflection on the meaning of the place of exhibition. Thecentral element of the intervention is a white cube as an emblem of an ideal exhibition space as well asa symbol of Western modernism&#38;amp;#39;s ideological field. Different types of NG&#38;amp;#39;s activities, such as establishinga register, field markings and events, artistic interventions (which will be introduced also at the triennalescreening) are presented surrounding the cube. Through the experience of the exhibition, the whitecube emerges as a backdrop as it is made up of three sides only. However, it also takes on a newmeaning as a space of articulation between the inside and the outside of the museum. In the emptinessof the ideological field of a conflicted contemporaneity NG therefore highlights the importance of therelationship between the art world and the outside world through the medium of physical space as key for the exploration of sensual, emotional, rational and communal form. The White Cube is thus open.

THE EXHIBITION IS OUTDOORS, 2021.

Solo exhibition at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana
5 videos, sound ambience, wooden constructions, prints.

25 May —25 July 2021

The Exhibition is Outdoors served as an introduction to the work of the art and research group by showcasing the database of nonuments and staged art interventions, as well as field events. With their analysis of the historical context, field markings and/or art interventions, the Nonument Group interweave the spaces of the past and the future, everyday spaces and spaces of art. The exhibition layout, which intends to present their work method in three sections, also poses various questions: the unfinished database opens up the question of archive, art interventions are displayed as mere fragments of the staged work, and the upcoming markings of nonuments out there are linked to events that will take place outside the museum during the exhibition, with the documentary material to be added later on. The exhibition layout thus remains an unfinished whole that is constantly being added to, and – crucially – directs the attention to the field, outside of museum space.
The Exhibition is Outdoors thus shed light on the nonument phenomenon from three different angles and by providing a multi-layered experience opened up the question of the possibility to perceive different dislocated events and time fractures in parallel, as well as utilizes space to explore the dividing lines between architecture, art, memory and heritage, which are difficult to pin down.

	Nonument Group’s intervention From Nowhere to Noplace, Pioneer Railway, at the site of Ljubljana’s former Pioneer Railway, took place on the 25 May 2019, on the former Tito’s Day of Youth. The intervention joined multidisciplinary research with elements of performance, narration, visual and sound elements. It addressed themes of memory and erasure in relation to infrastructure and ideology and was realised as a performative light and sound walk during the night on the ghostly former tracks of the Pioneer Railway.

From Nowhere to Noplace was a performative sound walk in which walkers were invited to take a collective guided walk, while listening to the sound essay that merges documentary sounds, excerpts of interviews with former pioneers and experts, and a narrated soundscape. Three performers–futuristic pioneers that guided the tour, performed symbolic choreographies to mark the decisive points in the railway’s life: VISION / OPENING / WORK / DECLINE. Each chapter had a different light-scape atmosphere. The procession concluded with the burning of four words: FUTURE, BODOČNOST (what is to come), NOWHERE, NO PLACE.

	FROM NOWHERE TO NOPLACEVideo essay, 20’48”
“If you took the railway, you ended up nowhere, you couldn’t do anything there. Well, you could sit in the waiting room, there were benches there, sure. Or you took a walk on the field,” remembers one of the pioneers, unknowingly commenting on trust in technology and the joy of travel in and of itself.
The Pioneer Railway was built for the bright future. Standing in that future, now the present, the Nonument Group’s video essay seamlessly shifts from its past (the actual of the archive), to its present erasure and extends to its possible futures. It is one of the possible attempts to explore the possible future at the intersection between an open archive and an experience of different contemporaneities.
