FIELD EVENTS
BOOK
Field events are a basis for reflection on innovative ways of recording and preserving heritage, a way to engage communities, and a starting point for artistic interventions that resist and open up space for new perspectives on abandoned, overlooked, forgotten, erased architectures.
Field events intentionally craft a specific situation that distances participants from a place through research, thereby preconditioning and enhancing their sensual experience. This transforms a mere visit into an informed and multifaceted engagement with the site. By gathering historical, cultural, and social data about it, the group provides a curated narrative that shapes how participants perceive the location. This prior knowledge forms a mental framework that influences sensory experiences once the participants are physically present.
Research introduces a temporal and intellectual distance between the participants and the place. By delving into the historical context and previous significances of a site, participants are encouraged to view it not just as a physical space but also as a layered construct of meanings. The information and context provided pre-condition the sensual experience by setting expectations and highlighting certain aspects of the site. For example, knowing the historical events that took place at a location can make the physical environment feel more poignant or charged with meaning. Sensory perceptions, such as sight, sound, and touch, are filtered through this pre-conditioned lens of understanding and expectation. By crafting a narrative around a place, field events create specific situations that guide participants’ interactions and responses. The narrative acts as a script that participants follow, consciously or unconsciously, directing their attention and emotional reactions to the site. This process of narrative construction creates a shared experience among participants, aligning their sensual experiences in a specific way.
